It was all about today

In the beginning, I picked The Kansas City Marathon because of when it fell— four days after my 28th birthday. In April, when I first learned that the marathon would be held on September 24th, it seemed so far off. Committing to it was off in the blurry distant future.

That future is now. This year’s birthday will always be remembered by the marathon. I woke up, as I do every morning, thinking of it. I’d like to say I will be running a mile for each year on Saturday, but that would be adding 2 extra miles and, I’m sorry, but that’s just not going to happen.

    Happy Birthday!

Just so you know, in Jewish tradition the letters of the alphabet have numerical value. (You may have heard that 18 equals “life”.) Well 28 equals “strength”. So how’s that for timing?

Best of luck!! (Actually “luck” is 77. So you better rely on “strength”!)

Happy Birthday and Good Luck on your first marathon!
I’ve run a few marathons. The best advice I can give:

Start slow (even though the adreniline is telling you to take off quickly).

Get into your pace and hold it.

Take shorter steps on the uphill, but keep your same leg turnover rate.

Walk through the aid stations, to make sure that you get your fluids.

    Most Importantly: Have fun!!!

    hey steph-
happy birthday! i hope you enjoyed your special day.
as i blow out this imaginary candle, i am wishing your leg to give you no (or at least little) pain to race. (you see, i never believed telling your wish meant it wouldn’t come true!)
